“That which we need the most will be found where we least want to look.” – Carl Jung

Rumi, a famous Sufi and Islamic metaphysician, tells the story of the drunk who’s one day found by a policeman as he’s looking frantically for something near a streetlamp.

The policeman asks the drunk what he’s looking for.

The drunk replies that he’s looking for a key. The policeman stops to help him look. After a period of unsuccessful searching, the policeman asks: “Where do you think you dropped it?”

The drunk replies: “Oh, I think I dropped it over there,” pointing to a place a little distance away. Flustered, the policeman asks, “Then why are you looking here?” The drunk replies, “Oh, because the light is better here.”

This story relates to today as much as it did 700+ years ago.

Whether you are reluctant to call that CTO or take on that tough new client, more often than not, the reward comes with the discomfort.

Maybe it’s time to set the alarm for 5am and start the workout routine that you’ve been thinking about for the past few months.

Likewise, if you’re feeling a little too “comfortable” in your current role and want to step outside your comfort zone, there’s never been a better time to try.
