So, you have a gap in your resume in 2020, and you’ve had three roles in the past two years. Does that mean that you’re a job hopper?

The short answer is; it depends but probably not.

As long as you have a good reason for leaving each role, most recruiters and employers will read between the lines and understand that SHIT HAPPENS…

For example, companies downsize, and it’s normally last in, first out. Other times you might be over-promised in the interview process, and the reality turns out to be very different from how things were portrayed. I’ve heard both scenarios a thousand times, and it won’t reflect badly on you as long as you’re upfront about it and don’t play the victim card. Instead, portray these bad situations as what they are – valuable learning experiences and insights into making your future career path clearer. In other words, turn these experiences into positives that make you a more complete candidate.

I’d also recommend explaining why you left previous roles in your resume and addressing them head-on in interviews clearly and consistently, so there is no room for misunderstanding.

Everything is relative. For example, if you left a great company after 18 months because of a lack of internal career progression, that’s fine too. It’s just important to be upfront and honest about it and turn the experience into a major positive.

Employers are becoming more and more aware that internal progression plans, external coaching and flexibility are no longer “nice-to-haves” but instead a non-negotiable to attract the best sales talent.

As long as you can align yourself with the role you are applying for and demonstrate that you are well placed to make a long-term commitment, the past remains the past as long as you use it as an advantage and not a burden.
